Norfolk County – as trustee for the property – sold it this spring for $65,000 to Michael and Natalie Ryerse.

After subtracting expenses, the county Tuesday divided the remainder between the Vittoria Lions Club and the Vittoria and District Foundation. Representatives of each group received cheques for $26,766 at Tuesday’s meeting of Norfolk council.

“It wasn’t big enough for a hub,” said Gary Cooper, a past chair of the Vittoria foundation. “If it were, we would’ve donated the land.”

Tuesday’s cheque presentation closes the circle on the Scout Hut’s ownership dating back to 1957.

That year, Cooper’s father John Cooper donated the land near the intersection of Fisher’s Glen Road and Vittoria Road to the Boy Scouts Association in support of children and youth activities in the community.

In 1963, the Boy Scouts Association donated the property to the Vittoria Lions Club for the same purpose. In 2007, the Vittoria Lions informed Norfolk County that youth groups had stopped using the property. The club asked the county to assume responsibility for the property as trustee.

After declaring the property surplus to the county’s needs, Norfolk received permission from the Public Guardian and Trustee in Ontario to sell the property and divide the proceeds – less expenses — equally between the Vittoria foundation and the Vittoria Lions.

“Both organizations have supported children and youth activities in Norfolk in the past and both are planning to continue to do so in the future,” Mayor Kristal Chopp said at the start of Tuesday’s meeting.

Participating in the cheque presentation along with the mayor were Vittoria Coun. Chris VanPaassen, Cooper and Vittoria foundation chair Tom Haskett.

The Vittoria Lions were represented by Don Sitter, George Demaiter and Nick Lyons.
