Dryden OPP seize contraband tobacco

A traffic stop by Dryden detachment OPP netted a haul of contraband tobacco with an estimated value of $214,000.

Police stopped the vehicle on Highway 17 in Wainwright Township west of Dryden at approximately 2:36 p.m., Wednesday, April 29. Upon further investigation, officers located and seized 54 cases of unmarked cigarettes.

Alfred Guenther, 62 of Winnipeg, MB, is charged with the Criminal Code offense of trafficking in contraband tobacco. Guenther was released from custody pending appearance in the Dryden Court of Justice on July 20.

Emo non-profit $90k fraud

An Emo man is facing fraud charges following a joint investigation by Rainy River district OPP and the Northwest Region Crime Unit.

The investigation, which began in June 2018, uncovered the fraudulent use of over $90,000 dollars by an individual associated with a local not for profit organization in the Town of Emo. The fraudulent activity occurred from 2014 until 2018.

As a result of this investigation Jason Lilley, 47, was charged with several Criminal Code offences, including: Fraud over $5,000; theft over $5,000; possession of property over $5,000 obtained by crime; criminal breach of trust; false pretense, forgery and use of forged documents.

Lilley will answer to the charges in the Ontario Court of Justice on June 22.
