Distraction theft nets credit card

On Friday, May 10, at approximately 4:34 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Oxford County Detachment investigated a theft after being called to a Tillsonburg address.

Through the course of the investigation, it has been determined that a female resident had been shopping at The Tillsonburg Town Centre mall and was returning to her vehicle when she was approached by an unknown male. The male indicated that he had located money under her vehicle and insisted that she take the money.

The victim then opened her purse and put the money into her wallet at which time the male removed a credit card unbeknownst to the victim. It was later discovered that the credit card was missing and two transactions had already been completed.

The male suspect is described as white, 40-50 years of age and was wearing dark coloured clothing.

Thieves enter unlocked farm building

On Friday, May 10, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Oxford County Detachment investigated a break and enter at a Karn Road, South West Oxford Township address.

Through the course of investigation, it was determined that between 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 3:30 a.m. on Friday, May 10, unknowns gained entry into an unlocked building located on the property. Once inside, unknowns entered an office area and removed a laptop computer along with a saw.

Officers that arrived on scene located a Stihl quick saw laying in a grassy area near the side of the driveway. The saw was subsequently returned to its rightful owner.

Traffic complaint leads to arrest

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Oxford County Detachment charged a 28-year-old male after police investigated an incident at a Lisgar Avenue Tillsonburg address.

On Saturday, May 11, at approximately 10:59 p.m. the OPP were contacted by a concerned member of the motoring public about a vehicle travelling along the roadway in Tillsonburg. Officers patrolling the area subsequently located the vehicle and stopped it to investigate.

As a result of investigation, police have charged 28-year-old Kody Robert Baker of Norfolk County with operation while impaired, driving while under suspension, fail to surrender insurance card and fail to comply with probation order.

He is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Woodstock at a later date.

“The OPP remains committed to ensuring Ontario roads are safe from alcohol-impaired and drug-impaired drivers and I am reminding all drivers that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe when driving,” said Inspector Tony Hymers, Detachment Commander, Oxford County OPP in a media release.

Female fails to pay for taxi fare, bolts

On Saturday, May 11, at approximately 5:04 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Oxford County Detachment investigated a theft after being called to a Lisgar Avenue, Tillsonburg address.

Through investigation, it has been determined that a female contacted a local taxi company from the St. Thomas area and requested that she be taken to a Tilllsonburg address. Upon arrival at the address the female exited the vehicle and failed to pay the outstanding fair.

Beware of grandparent scam

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Oxford County Detachment investigated an incident after receiving a complaint from a resident at a South-West Oxford Township address.

On Monday, May 13 at approximately 12:37 p.m., OPP were contacted by a concerned resident reporting an attempted fraud.

Through the course of investigation, it was determined that a resident received a phone call from a male that was pretending to be the victim’s grandson. He informed the victim that he had been in a motor vehicle collision and needed $12,000 in order to be released on bail.

The victim immediately realized that this was fact a scam and told the caller that she was speaking to criminal trying to get her money. The male kept insisting that he was their grandson and requested the money be forwarded immediately. The victim hung up the phone and immediately contacted police.

The OPP are reminding all Oxford County residents to be extremely vigilant and to be alert for unsolicited calls, emails, faxes or visitors that arrive at your residence. If anyone should receive a call in this manner, please contact your immediate family and inquire if anyone is in need of assistance. Please do not forward any funds without speaking to family members first.

Modern, tech savvy, scammers have personal information about before they ever try to contact you. It is imperative to verify any unsolicited contact before you respond and provide information. Keep your guard up when you receive a surprise call from anyone soliciting funds and indicating that a loved one is in jail or have been involved in a serious incident.

“You work hard for your money, so work hard to protect it. Do not hand it over to a smooth talking con artist. Fraud is a multi-billion dollar per year business that will only stop when the con artists stop making money,” said Inspector Tony Hymers, Detachment Commander, Oxford County OPP in a media release.

Alert officer stops vehicle, impaired driver arrested

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Oxford County Detachment charged a 23-year-old male after police stopped a motor vehicle at a Barker Street, Tillsonburg address.

On Thursday, May 9, at approximately 12:15 a.m., an officer was conducting patrols in the area of Tillson Avenue when a vehicle attracted the officer’s attention. The vehicle was subsequently stopped and investigated at a Barker Street address.

As a result of investigation, police have charged 23-year-old Phillip Gingrich of Norwich Township with operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs and operation while impaired- blood alcohol concentration 80 plus.

He is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice located in Woodstock at a later date.

Tip jar stolen from Ingersoll store

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment investigated an incident at a Bell Street, Ingersoll address. On Saturday, May 11, at approximately 10:45 p.m., police were contacted by a business owner reporting a theft.

Through the course of investigation, it was determined that at approximately 9:37 p.m., a female attended that store and removed a tip jar from the counter top near the cash register.

Officers arrived at the address and reviewed the surveillance footage and identified a 33-year-old female responsible for the theft. A warrant for her arrest is being obtained by investigators.

OPP investigate attempted theft of pickup truck

On Monday, May 13, at approximately 12:11 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Oxford County Detachment investigated a mischief at a Hagel’s Line, South-West Oxford Township.

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that in the early morning hours, unknowns gained entry into a pickup truck that was parked in the driveway of the residence. Once inside, unknowns damaged the steering column in an attempt to remove the vehicle however they were unsuccessful.

Smoking in vehicle with passengers under 16

The Ontario Provincial Police Oxford County Detachment want to remind all vehicle operators that it is against the law smoke in a motor vehicle where the occupants are 16 years or younger under the Smoke Free Ontario Act.

The OPP were contacted on Wednesday, May 8, at approximately 2:25 p.m. by a concerned citizen after observing a vehicle children travelling along Noxon Street in Ingersoll. The driver was observed smoking inside the vehicle with three small children in the rear seats.

Effective January 21, 2009, Ontarians cannot smoke in motor vehicles with passengers under 16. Under the law, a driver or passenger smoking in a motor vehicle, while someone else under the age of 16 is present, is committing an offence, and can be fined $125. Second-hand smoke in motor vehicles can be up to 27 times more concentrated than in a smoker’s home.

“Drivers often take extra care to protect children in vehicles; having smoke-free cars should be part of that protection,” said Inspector Tony Hymers, Detachment Commander, Oxford County OPP in a media release.

OPP are not soliciting funds from the community

The Ontario Provincial Police Oxford County Detachment is urging all residents to hang up the phone if you should receive a call from unknown individuals soliciting for money on behalf of the OPP.

On Wednesday, May 8, at approximately 7:37 p.m., the OPP were contacted by a concerned resident from a Concession Street East, Tillsonburg address reporting a fraud.

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that an unknown individual contacted the homeowner indicating that they were with the OPP and were attempting to raise money for additional tow trucks.

The Ontario Provincial Police does NOT solicit funds from members of the community. Police are urging all residents to be vigilant if they receive a phone call from an unknown person claiming to be from the OPP soliciting donations. Please hang-up the phone.
