Norfolk OPP report a coyote sighting was brought to its attention. The animal was spotted in the area of Norfolk Street North in the north end of Simcoe last week.

“If you see a coyote, wolf or fox, keep your distance and the animal will most likely avoid you,” Const. Ed Sanchuk of the Norfolk OPP said in a news release.

Coyote attacks have been documented in Canada. The carnivores are capable of causing serious injury. The OPP share the following recommendations for individuals confronted by an aggressive wild predator:

  • Never approach or touch a wild animal.
  • Do not turn your back or run from a wild animal.
  • Back away from the animal while remaining calm.
  • Stand tall, wave your hands, and make lots of noise.
  • Carry a flashlight at night.

If a wild animal poses an immediate threat or danger to public safety, call 911.

As well, coyotes are naturally curious about other dogs and will gravitate to properties where dogs are kept. Norfolk OPP advise dog owners to keep their pets inside at night, keep yards clear of dog waste, do not leave scrap meat or pet foot outdoors, and spay or neuter your dog so they don’t seek out mating partners that could include wild coyotes.
