On Friday, the province recorded 77 new cases of COVID-19, which was the highest single-day rise since mid-May. The Alberta government is no longer providing updated case numbers on the weekends and the next update was scheduled for after publication deadline.

As of Saturday, 17 patients and staff members at the Misericordia Community Hospital tested positive for COVID-19. Five patients had died as a result of the outbreak that has locked down the hospital from receiving any new patients or visitors.

As of Monday, AHS reported there were 676 active COVID-19 cases in Alberta, with 45 of those cases resulting in patients being hospitalized. Ten of the 45 were in intensive care units.

The newest cases brought Alberta’s total confirmed cases to 8,826 since the start of the pandemic. The province said 7,989 people have recovered in Alberta from the novel coronavirus.

As of Monday, the province confirmed there have been 161 deaths due to COVID-19, which was one less than the previous day. Alberta Health said the decrease was due to a death previously attributed to the disease was determined to not have been a contributing factor to the death.

The majority of the COVID-19 cases in Alberta continue to be in the Calgary zone, which had 267 cases Monday. The Edmonton zone was second with 199 cases.

The province said 540,102 COVID-19 tests had been completed as of July 13.

A photo circulating on social media over the weekend also caused some concern in the fight against the pandemic. The photo showed a crowded beach at Sylvan Lake with many groups well within two metres of each other.

Tom McMillan, a spokesperson for Alberta Health, said that the province continues to recommend that all Albertans physically distance whenever possible, including at the beach.

“Please be respectful of others and follow all the public health guidance we have provided. COVID-19 is still here and we must all do our part in limiting the spread,” McMillan said.
