County offering cool treat for SCOOP referrals

Strathcona County is hoping to entice more people to become members of the Strathcona County Online Opinion Panel (SCOOP) by teaming up with local Dairy Queens.
The partnership sees SCOOP members who refer a friend to the online survey tool get a $5 off voucher for their next purchase at DQ.
Since Sept. 18, 2018, SCOOP has been an excellent resource for getting information and hope to get even more input from even more residents.
“On Sept. 18, 2019 we celebrated the one-year anniversary and have 1,500 people signed up, which means they have completed the profile survey,” explained Dawn Green, coordinator for public engagement with Strathcona County. “What we found is that we have lots of people from Sherwood Park but we’re still looking for more people in rural areas. We also need more men to sign up and elders.”
The county hopes to attract some younger residents, age 15 to 34-years-old.
“They tend to be the users of our programs and services by answering our surveys to find out how we can do things differently,” Green said.
Green hopes the referral program with DQ gets more people signed up for SCOOP so they can get a diverse range of opinions on the wide variety of issues SCOOP has surveys on.
“We need a variety of voices so we can plan our programs and services well,” Green said. “We’re trying to diversify the base of SCOOP and get more people aware of what we’re doing. What we want to do is provide Strathcona County citizens and people who work here a voice to give their opinions on a variety of topics and we’ve had surveys about community gardens, traffic calming, recreation and culture and so many other topics.”
Those interested in referring someone to SCOOP can simply click the invite tab on the left side of the SCOOP screen and send the invite to whomever they’d like. The referral can be shared via email, Facebook, Twitter or you can copy the link and share it however you like.
The referral program has already seen some new SCOOP members join but county staff hopes to see more people sign up.
“We just started the survey this week and have already had 22 referrals so far and have lots of capacity,” she said. “We’re thrilled there have been 1,500 people in the first year and we have around 98,000 people living in Strathcona County and our goal is to make SCOOP representative of the population.”
