LANGTON BAPTIST CHURCH

Ted Molyneaux opened the February 9 church service at 11 a.m. with prayer and Lord’s Prayer in unison.

His message was on ‘The growth of the Believer – Part 1.’

“Sometimes we do things we don’t want to do. God is working in us throughout our life. God has a place for us. We need to stop and listen. We need to stop and listen. How do we humble ourselves before the Lord? We honor God first, then family, then the church. Encourage family and build them up. God has the final say. Pray for one another.” Followed by prayer.

AVONDALE UNITED CHURCH

The congregation at Avondale, 60 Harvey St., met for worship on Sunday, Feb. 23 with Doris VandenEeckhout leading, Laura Hawley running the projector and Murray and Shirley Fulkerson as ushers and greeters.

The call to worship was repeated responsively and Don’t Be Afraid and Joyful, Joyful were sung. In the time with the children, Doris used two candles to illustrate how the light of Jesus can transform us too.

The scripture read was Matthew 17:1-9 The Transfiguration. The message for adults was “Do Not Be Afraid”. Jesus went up a mountain with Peter, James and John where Jesus was transfigured with a brilliant light. Moses and Elijah also appeared to them. Hearing God’s voice come from the cloud above, the disciples were terrified and fell to the ground. Jesus told them to get up, not to be afraid but also not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had been raised from the dead! For us our greatest fear is public speaking and the second is death. Many are afraid of spiders, snakes, high places, etc. and these fears make us feel unsettled and have sleep problems. How do we live with fear when we must? Speech and life coaches are available. Jesus told us to share God’s love with others. Perhaps we should give up fear for Lent.

The choir’s anthem was “Open Eyes and Burning Hearts” with the solo parts sung by Bruce Fleming.

Our worship concluded with the benediction and singing of Christ Whose Glory Fills the Sky and Sent Out in Jesus’ Name. Our thought for the week is “Do not be afraid of your fears. They are not there to scare you. They are there to let you know that something is worth it.”

You are welcome to join us Sunday at 10:30 a.m. when Doris will again lead in our worship. Come a bit early and enjoy a coffee and visit first.

There is a Country Jam at Avondale this Saturday, Feb. 29, with doors open at 4 p.m. Our Roast Beef Supper will be Sunday, March 8 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tickets are available by calling our church office 842-5532.
