That is why the Norfolk County Heritage and Culture team has organized a county-wide bell ringing at 6 p.m. on Dec. 24 where they are asking everyone to stand on their front porch to ring some bells for a full minute.

“With the museums and archives closed, our department hasn’t been experiencing that personal connection that we usually have with people,” said Melissa Collver, director of Heritage and Culture. “We had to think of ways to connect with them and bring people together in other ways.”

The team is offering multiple holiday initiatives this season, including bell ringing and virtual crafts.

“We were trying to think of a way to spread some cheer,” said Collver.

The group also wanted to find ways to bring the community together in a common activity, while remaining physically distanced from each other.

The idea for the bell ringing was inspired by the noise-making for frontline workers heard every evening earlier on during the COVID-19 pandemic, but these bells will be for the entire community, Santa, and his helpers.

“From Wilsonville to Long Point and everywhere in between,” read a Facebook post about the event.

“We may not be able to come together in the traditional sense this Christmas but we can certainly greet family, friends, and neighbours with the cheerful sound of a bell.”

Throughout the month of December the Norfolk County Heritage & Culture Facebook page will also be sharing digital crafts that families can follow along with at home. The crafts will focus on Christmas traditions of the past, and how to make different types of ornaments and decorations.

There will also be readings of A Christmas Carol, streaming the Sunday before the big day. Follow the Heritage & Culture social medias to keep up to date on each of the different events taking place.
