Court digest: Assault nets seven months time served

A Norfolk County man was sentenced last month in Ontario Court to seven months of time he had already served for assaulting a person while threatening them with a knife.

Christopher Lyle Matzig, 34, pleaded guilty to three offences before Justice Aubrey Hilliard: theft of items under $5,000 in April 2020. and possession of a weapon and assault in March this year.

He initially had been charged with assault with a weapon but was allowed to plead to the lesser charge of simple assault. The charges were in connection with a fight on Norfolk Street South in Simcoe at around 9:30 a.m. on March 16.

Matzig’s theft charges related to him being seen three times removing merchandise from a West Street store in Simcoe. Officers watched him and then arrested him.

Hilliard placed Matzig on an 18-month probationary period but denied a request to take his DNA.

Two sentenced in connection to drug bust

The last of a group arrested with drugs on Kent Street South in Simcoe in 2019 has been dealt with in Ontario Court.

In mid-July that year, Norfolk OPP used a search warrant to enter the home and arrested four people – one from Norfolk County and the others from Barrie and the Toronto area.

They were each charged with possession of fentanyl and cocaine for trafficking and several faced charges of failing to comply with probation orders.

In November, 2020, charges were withdrawn against the local man, Derrick Chartrand, 67, and Khivant Wright, 27, of Barrie.

Marcus Opoku-ware, 27, of East York, was sentenced in October last year to a lesser charge of simple possession of drugs and possession of stolen property and received a time-served sentence of 63 days.

But Opoku-ware was rearrested in December 2020 in Norfolk and charged with trafficking and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

He pleaded guilty to one count of possession for the purpose in July and was sentenced by Justice Aubrey Hilliard to four days of time served plus 86 days of weekend jail.

Finally, Hilliard also sentenced Marjon Guadario, 26, of Etobicoke, after he pleaded guilty to the 2019 trafficking charge and a failure to comply with probation orders.

Guadario was given credit for serving 18 days in jail and ordered to jail for a further 247 days.

First of trio charged in drug trafficking is sentenced

A Brant County man who was part of a trio arrested when the Haldimand/Norfolk County Community Street Crime searched a Robinson Street home with a drug warrant, was sentenced to time he had already served when he appeared in Ontario Court.

Donla Mitchell Hogg, 19, pleaded guilty to possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and the unauthorized possession of a dangerous weapon.

Hogg was charged with possession of cocaine, while his two cohorts were each charged with possession of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and nabilone; possession of stolen property and possession of counterfeit money.

One of Hogg’s cohorts has since died and the other continues in Simcoe court.

Hogg was sentenced to five months of time served and placed on a year-long probation.
