So say the experts at Rick’s Carpet, a local chain of flooring and installation professionals who have identified one of the biggest trends in flooring in 2021 — waterproof laminate and luxury vinyl plank.

“Traditionally, if you were looking for waterproof options you had two choices, ceramic tile or sheet vinyl,” says Rick’s Carpet staff member Jill Vandermeersch. “They’re good options, but neither are very DIY friendly, and ceramic can be very costly.”

“Waterproof flooring is one more thing to check off your list when it’s time to update your home,” Vandermeersch continues. “It’s very durable, especially when it comes to kids and pets, it’s scratch and scuff resistant, and you don’t have to worry about mopping up spills before your flooring absorbs them because they’re specifically designed to repel water.”

Laminate Flooring

Since “click-and-lock” laminate options hit the flooring scene more than 20 years ago, they’ve been a favourite for home improvement projects and DIYers thanks to the ease of installation and affordable price. The problem is they haven’t always been a suitable option for areas like kitchens, bathrooms, mud or laundry rooms where moisture tends to be common, Vandermeersch explains. Laminate flooring is made from pressed wood particles with a laminated surface that is printed to resemble natural materials, like wood patterns, then topped with a translucent, scratch-proof coating. To make it waterproof, manufacturers use special interlocking systems with sealed edges to connect the planks, making them waterproof for up to 72 hours.

Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl plank or tile is often mistaken for laminate; however, it offers less maintenance. Typically made from a stone composite core and encased in PVC vinyl that is embossed and textured, it is durable and often hard to differentiate from natural alternatives. Its waterproof layers aid in durability and make for easy cleaning. “Trends are leaning towards consistent flooring throughout the home, from the front door to back. Waterproof flooring allows the customer to achieve this look,” Vandermeersch adds.

Vandermeersch said that both laminates and luxury vinyl planks are good options for homeowners looking for waterproof flooring and are similarly priced in stock at about $2.99 to $3.99 per square foot (approximately $5 to $6 installed).
