For the second consecutive year COVID-19 has slammed the door on the Ontario Spring Discovery Show. The Doug Ford government’s shutdown of the province beginning in early April killed all hopes that the first major purebred dairy cattle show of the year for Holsteins and Jerseys would be held.

Ancaster was already in the grey zone when the Ford government announced the provincial shutdown effective on Easter weekend, a spokesman said.

“The Jersey & Holstein show originally planned for April 21 & 22, 2021 in Ancaster, ON has been cancelled due to the ongoing Provincial restrictions due to COVID-19,” the show committee said in a post on its Facebook page.

It also announced that it is already planning to hold the show in April 2022 at the Ancaster Fairgrounds.

“Construction of a new, additional facility is scheduled to begin in the coming months,” it said, adding the committee is looking forward to seeing exhibitors and sponsors then.

In the meantime, the Jersey Ontario Invitational Sale is going ahead online this week. Bidding begins April 8 and runs through April 10. 63 animals from six intermediate aged calves to one mature cow are offered by Ontario Jersey cattle breeders. It is hosted on the hibid.com auction site and you can check out the catalogue on the Jersey Ontario Facebook page or go to jerseyontario.hibid.com.
