Little City Mrkt has been open since the end of August. Owner Kim Risling started the restaurant after an injury leading her to no longer be able to run her contracting business. It was always a dream of hers to have her own establishment.

“I have had the dream for a long time. I endeavoured to make my dream a reality and created a job. The process of setting up the establishment took months of renovating planning. [I was] learning more about running a different kind of business,” said Risling.

“After months of long days and late nights, [by] early July I started to come in and see ‘wow this was really happening.’ Having the courage to push forth during second thought moments was, and still remains hard. It takes a lot of dedication to keep your eye on the ball.”

The location incorporates a menu with daily features specializing in soups and sandwiches. All of the ingredients are locally sourced and features a small market where you can pick up anything from local beef and elk, to produce and hot sauce.

“The menu plans were originally designed to be kept simple. A smaller menu allows me to keep the best quality ingredients available to the customer. Some have even become a little famous like the waffle hero breakfast sandwich.”

The restaurant has added an incredible dynamic to the warm and welcoming Mayerthorpe community that Risling says has been so supportive.

“Since opening in late August I feel supported by our local community and surrounding communities as we have had people from all over Alberta and further stop in. I am very grateful for the support I have received from the start.”

Risling added that so far, the greatest success of the restaurant has been hearing from the people they love the food.

“A happy satisfied customer is a success to me. I also would not have such a great place to enjoy without the support of my awesome staff and many good friends. Mayerthorpe is a supportive community. I appreciate the daily repeat customers and [the] word of mouth advertising. I am very grateful.”
