“We can now go for scenic drives or visit some of the nearby parks again,” says Craig Wonnell, one of four live-in managers at the seven-year-old retirement community in Woodstock, Ont.

He notes that all protocols continue to be followed as activities resume and no cases of COVID have been reported at the residence since the beginning of the pandemic. As always, residents are invited to enjoy three chef-prepared meals each day, as well as having access to nutritious snacks at any time.

The live-in managers remain a key part of the social network at Cedarview. Since they live there themselves, they join their fellow residents for meals and help with serving beverages. Chatting as they circulate among the tables also gives them the opportunity to check that everyone is well and note if anyone is missing and might need assistance.

“We’re all about convenience and independence here,” says Wonnell, emphasizing that balancing the ever-present concern for everyone’s safety is the provision of the many services that make every day enjoyable.

Regular activities are continuing inside and outside the well-equipped and attractively landscaped community. Residents may wish to attend a yoga class or work out alone on state-of-the-art equipment in the exercise room. They may prefer to tend raised gardens or stroll around walking paths in the grounds. They may choose to play bridge, euchre or poker in the card room. Or they may simply want to relax in their spacious suites.

Numerous amenities focus on making daily living pleasant and relaxing. Such provisions as linen and housekeeping services, a TV lounge and billiards and card rooms are all geared towards a comfortable lifestyle and choice for residents.

The library offers a changing supply of books — many of them current bestsellers. The movie theatre, complete with a popcorn machine, is a favourite among movie enthusiasts, while the business centre is available for any semi-retired residents still busy with work-related activities. An ice cream station and snack bar available 24/7 are also very popular with residents.

Additional conveniences include a beauty salon, barber shop and day spa on site and a bus to transport residents to medical appointments as required, as well as for shopping trips and theatre and museum visits (in accordance with pandemic protocol).

Among the other amenities is a guest suite for visitors (which, like the rest of Cedarview, is pet friendly) and a travel program through which residents may stay for a week, free of charge, at any of the other Hawthorn residences across North America. (While COVID-19 restrictions are in place, the travel program is to the other Canadian locations only.)

Both the communal spaces and the individual suites reflect a sense of gracious living. Public spaces feature curved staircases, beautiful chandeliers and wide corridors, conveying a sense of plentiful space.

The suites, meanwhile, range from large studios to one- and two-bedroom apartments in various layouts, many with balconies overlooking the landscaped grounds and walking paths. The suites offer the same sense of spaciousness and attention to detail as the communal areas. For example, the oversized bathrooms all have heat lamps and every suite has an emergency call system.

Suites at Cedarview begin at $2,935, which includes all meals and utilities. The only additional optional expense is a personal telephone.
