Andrew Powell has been a fixture at events in the Tri-Region and now needs the community’s help.
The area musician has lent his time and talent to groups in Stony Plain and Spruce Grove and was diagnosed with cancer in December 2019. The horrifying and hideous illness is in his bones, has a presence in his esophagus and has made doing what he loves to do difficult.
“I studied music at [the University of California: Los Angeles] before we moved up here 15 years ago,” Powell said. “Before I was diagnosed, I had gone to some gigs in Edmonton and found I was in a lot of pain. I was sweating profusely and my doctor said I had fractured my hip.”
The diagnosis and later prognosis turned out to be quite negative. While in the run-up to this news, he also lost his job with an American company. He launched a blog as a result of being unable to perform as much, and, for Powell, he hopes that The Lighter Side of Cancer on subscription-based service website Patreon will allow him to provide for his family and still get the chance to entertain the general public.
