Netflix sets 'Father of the Bride' reunion sequel

A Father of the Bride reunion is taking place this week and we’re all invited to attend.

Director Nancy Meyers has announced a brand-new instalment to the 1990s comedy series starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, almost 30 years after the first film hit theatres.

Netflix shared the news in a tweet Wednesday that read, “What are you doing friday night? We thought so. You are cordially invited to join the Banks family for…Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish).”

In a previous tweet earlier in the week, Netflix posted a video showing George Banks (Martin) scrolling through emails from his kids Annie Banks MacKenzie (Kimberly Williams) and Matty Banks (Kieran Culkin), and hapless wedding coordinator Franck Eggelhoffer (Martin Short), when he gets an invite to a family video call on Sept. 25.

The get-together will air at 6 p.m. ET on Netflix’s YouTube and Facebook pages in support of the charity World Central Kitchen.

The 1991 original — which was a remake of a 1950 movie that featured Elizabeth Taylor — revolved around George Banks, an owner of an athletic shoe company who is tasked with helping put together a wedding for his daughter, Annie. Keaton played his wife, Nina.

Meyers had been teasing the reunion for several weeks, and earlier this month she shared a photo that pictured Williams planting a kiss on Martin’s cheek with the caption, “If he thought a wedding was a lot, how would he react to 2020? Coming soon to the phone in your hand!”

In 2014, Martin shot down rumours he and Keaton were set to shoot a third instalment tweeting, “So excited to read I’m doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven’t seen a script or been offered the role!”

At the time, reports suggested the third film would feature Martin and Keaton’s characters planning yet another wedding — but this time, for their gay son. A 1995 sequel saw Annie and Nina getting pregnant at the same time.

Martin’s return to acting, albeit in a limited fashion, will be a welcome surprise for fans after he told the Sun last year that he had quit the business.

“I’m retired from movies. …. I’m not actively pursuing movies and they don’t actively pursue me,” he said.
