“We do a lot of social events (throughout the year) to bring out fun and fellowship, and get people connected,” association program co-ordinator Carys Wyn Hughes said. “We’ll have a DJ, we’ll have prizes, we’ll have refreshments and you don’t need to be with a partner to come to the Valentine’s Day dance. That’s where the partnership with the line-dancing club is absolutely fantastic.”

“Line dancing is an individual dance,” said club president Ann Young, who will be leading dancers through five or six songs at the dance. “It’s pretty simple. The steps are very repetitive, it’s fun to do and it involves a bunch of likeminded people. So we’re just trying to promote the fact that you don’t need a partner to have a lot of fun and come out to dance and be active.”

The line-dancing club, Young added, meets weekly on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Burnside Agriplex, next door to the Stratford Rotary Complex, where dancers get to learn and practise line dancing to a variety of songs from different musical genres.

“As a group, we just come out and we laugh. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and just enjoy a couple hours of activity.  … We’ll dance to anything from Alan Jackson to Bruno Mars to The Four Seasons to Blake Shelton. It’s a wide variety. You can do the same dance to a number of different songs. … Beginners find it pretty easy to get going because our teachers break down the dances right away. We walk through the steps section by section and then we dance to them,” Young said.

Outside of the line-dancing portion, the Valentine’s Day dance will offer attendees plenty of opportunities to dance any way they like, with or without a partner.

“We are a great community of active adults,” Hughes said of the association, which currently comprises more than 500 members. “A lot of people don’t know we’re here, so we want to create the opportunity for people to come and mingle and see what we’re all about.”

Tickets for the Valentine’s Day dance are $5 each and can be purchased either at the door or by contacting Hughes at either aadults@stratford.ca or 226-921-1428.
