AlvegoRoot Theatre is premiering online a new play, The Bicycle Play, written by Dan Ebbs, Kydra Ryan and Adam Corrigan Holowitz, founder and artistic director of the theatre company, from Friday through to Sept. 27.

The company will also stream a recording of Holowitz’s Pirates of Long Point.

Both shows were created to be filmed and are directed by Holowitz with an acting ensemble including Ebbs, Ryan, Casey Cornell, Elizabeth Durand and Bronwyn Wilson.

The Bicycle Play “explores London’s formative relationship with the bicycle” telling stories “of the Londoners who have used bicycles to shape their lives and our city, including Jane Bigelow, George Wenige, Greg Curnoe and Jessie Robins,” Holowitz said.

Pirates of Long Point is a comedy based on true events of piracy on the Lake Erie shore but told in the style of a 19th century melodrama about a group of youths luring ships onto the sandbars at Long Point and looting the ships. When an American navy admiral arrives it takes a “whip-smart girl” to save Long Point from being annexed by the U.S.

“It was very exciting to be able to return to the rehearsal hall to create these two plays,” Holowitz said.

“These are local stories that I believe are important right now. The Bicycle Play tells stories of many influential, colourful and complex people in our city’s history who had one thing in common: a love of the bicycle.”

Holowitz said Pirates of Long Point is “a joyful celebration of theatre, based on true stories from this area’s past, that will bring laughter, release and delight — something we all need right about now.”
