On the Boards: Huron Country farce packed with plot twists

The British farce, Out of Order, by Ray Cooney.

The Play: The British farce, Out of Order, by Ray Cooney. Cooney, considered the master of British farce, is a member of the Order of the British Empire whose best-known comedy, Run For Your Wife, ran for nine years in London’s West End. Out of Order, first produced in 1991, won the Olivier Award for comedy. It tells the story of a junior government minister, Richard Willey, a married man who has arranged a secret rendezvous with Jane Worthington, a married typist for the official Opposition. They arrive to find a body in their suite and Willey calls his secretary, George Pigden, for help to avoid a scandal. Then, several uninvited guests arrive, including their spouses.
