Three to See in Edmonton this weekend: Sures and Laverty, Davies' art and Buckner's substack

Article content

Ben Sures and Eileen Laverty: This Northern Lights Folk Club singer-songwriter double bill features Saskatoon’s Eileen Laverty and local troubadour Ben Sures, each known for storytelling chops and sense of humour. Laverty moved to Canada when she was six, a self-proclaimed Prairie girl with deep Irish roots.

The multitalented Sures, meanwhile — a visual artist and musical curator at The Works fest — writes with childlike curiosity and is always chasing new proclivities. April 20’s Pharis and Jason Romero show is sold out, so this is your last chance to catch a Northern Lights show till September!

Details: 8 p.m. at Parkdale Community League (9135 146 St.), $27/northernlightsfc.ca, $32/door.

Valley Reflections: “My love of hiking and walking for health and relaxation and because I lived in proximity to Edmonton’s river valley prompted me to do some plein air oil panels on the river valley trails,” explains Jim Davies of his shimmering, surreal new landscape exhibit. “Most importantly, beyond the mechanics of developing a painting, is the ability to convey a mood. Sometimes mysterious, but also symbolic and otherworldly.”

Come experience them in person at the opening, bring your snowshoes!

Extractions: Former Edmontonian musician and poet Richard Buckner has forever been a keen translator of the ephemeral into little jewels of crisp (if random) insight. Between his house concerts, which don’t tend to bring him anywhere near here, you can still ease up to a hint of his essence by subscribing to his substack, which at various levels of dropping coins into the fountain gets you his studio ruminations and splendid detritus, philosophical meanderings and, as he puts it, “touring postcards sent from the road to nowhere.”

Dig around, enjoy the visuals, engage at any level, you’ll find something to spark up the dark.
