New Year’s Day was once an important ‘calling day’
Dating, or I should say “courting,” was a much more formal, regimented activity in 1908 than it is today. There was a complicated series of rituals associated with courting, and it was the duty of parents to instil within their children (especially the young women) the acceptable and unacceptable rules associated with this oldest of all “social games.”
Ghost stories were once part of Christmas celebrations
For the last hundred years, North Americans have kept ghosts in their place, letting them only out in October in the run-up to our only haunted holiday, Halloween. But it wasn’t always this way, and it’s no coincidence that the most famous Christmas story is a ghost story.
