D'Hondt fourth at Provincials

Courtland golfer AnnMarie D'Hondt, representing the Tillsonburg and the Southwest Region, finished fourth in the first division at the July 14-15 Special Olympics Ontario provincials, hosted by the Peel Region, with nine-hole rounds of 60 and 61.

D'Hondt said the Caledon Golf and Country Club course, located in Caledon west of Brampton, was championship level.

"Yeah, pretty much," D'Hondt smiled.

She was quite happy with two consistent rounds, just nine shots away from the bronze medal at her second trip to the Provincials (she won silver in 2013). Jess Trojan from South Central won gold with a five-shot lead, scoring a two-round total of 105.

"But I didn't talk to a lot of people while I was golfing," said D'Hondt who likes to be social on the course, "because I was mostly focusing on the game."

D'Hondt, who started playing golf when she was seven, now drives it off the tee close to 150-160 yards.

"Yeah, that's a pretty good drive. I get in trouble once in a while, but mostly my hits make a curve. It goes one way, then all of a sudden comes back. Yeah, it slices... sometimes. Most of all, it was my putting. It was not good."

Hole No. 5 was one of her better holes when she hit the Par 3 green off the tee.

"It was the shortest hole, but it was down in the valley. Came out with a six iron, and yeah, nailed it. I was near the hole!"

The greens at Caledon were bigger than any course she's played in the Tillsonburg area.

"A lot bigger," she nodded. "And more sand traps. Mostly sand traps. The last hole was hard because it was a water hole - with the driver and then three wood. It was a long hole.

"Overall, we had fun and made a lot of new friends," said D'Hondt, who had her brother Darryl along as caddy. "That's the main thing, to meet a lot of new people."
