Break-and-enters, theft of pickup truck in Tillsonburg

Break-and-enter on North Street

The Ontario Provincial Police Oxford County Detachment received a report of a break and enter at North Street East, Tillsonburg.

On Sunday, August 6, at approximately 4:42 p.m., police received a call from a concerned resident reporting a break and enter. Through the course of investigation, it was determined that in the early morning hours, unknowns gained entry a locked residence and removed various items including jewellery and electronics.

Police are continuing to investigate and seek assistance from the public. If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they are being asked to contact the Oxford County OPP detachment at 1-888-310-1122.

Lock it or lose it

The OPP Oxford County Detachment is reminding the public to protect their property and valuables against would be thieves after a vehicle entry was reported on Allen Street, Tillsonburg.

On Monday, August 7, at approximately 10:45 a.m., police received a report of a theft from a motor vehicle. In the early morning hours, unknowns gained entry into an unlocked vehicle, and once inside removed a hooded sweatshirt, package of cigarettes and a wallet that contained personal and financial information.

Here are some tips to prevent you from becoming a victim:

Always secure your vehicle doors when parking your vehicle, even if you are only going to be a few minutes.

Remove valuables from your vehicle. If you can't, then keep them from plain view.

Park in well lighted areas with high traffic.

Clean out your garage and park your vehicle in it - locking your vehicle and the garage door.

Remember, if you see something, say something. If you see suspicious activity or behaviour around your vehicle or neighbourhood, report it.

Man faces robbery charge

The OPP Oxford County Detachment charged a 36-year-old male after investigating an incident on Queen Street, Tillsonburg.

On Monday, August 7, at approximately 10:47 a.m., police were contacted by a concerned citizen reporting a theft of a vehicle. Through the course of investigation, it was determined that a male entered a parked pickup truck located on the roadway. The male was confronted by the owner at which time the male accelerated with the owner hanging onto the side of the vehicle.

The suspect left the area at a high rate of speed at which time the owner let go of the vehicle. No serious injuries were reported.

The stolen pickup truck and man were subsequently located by patrolling officers at which time he was taken into custody without further incident.

As a result, police arrested and charged 36-year-old Paul William Caughlin of Ingersoll with robbery with theft, dangerous operation of motor vehicle, drive while disqualified and fail to comply with probation order.

He is to appear in Provincial Court, Woodstock at a later date to answer to the charges.

Norwich Township vehicle fires treated as arsons

The Ontario Provincial Police Oxford County Detachment recently investigated vehicle fires on Elgin Street West and Washington Street, Norwich Township, Ontario.

On Tuesday, August 8, between 6 a.m. and 9:34 a.m., police received calls from vehicle owners reporting damage to their vehicles.

Through the course of investigation, it was determined that unknowns gained entry into unlocked vehicles in the early morning hours, and once inside attempted to light the interior of the vehicles on fire. An attempt was made to light the exterior of one of the vehicles, not entered, on fire.

All of the vehicles involved sustained significant damage. No injuries were reported as a result of these incidents.

Police are continuing to investigate and is seeking the assistance of the public. If anyone has any information they are being asked to contact the Oxford County OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122.
