Friday's fundraising barbecue and auction to support equine facilitated learning

Chris Abbott -  Tillsonburg News

Tillsonburg's Dream Team Global, of Max International, is hosting a Barbecue Dinner and Auction fundraiser at the home of Bob and Irene Hurley, 2765 Rhineland Road, Delhi, on Friday, August 11 for a very special cause.

"I'm excited," said Irene Hurley. "It's going to be awesome."

Proceeds from the event will go to support SonFlower Stables, a local charity offering a unique blend of alternative methods of healing and grief resolution with equine facilitated learning for all ages.

Mary Howe, grief resolution specialist, has a team of 12 horses at SonFlower Stables in Otterville (www.sonflowerstables.com).

Co-conveners of the Barbecue Dinner and Auction, Irene Hurley and Virginia Armstrong, noted that grief resolution is essential for reaching the emotional, psychological, spiritual and physical needs of each individual. Symptomatic behaviours and conditions include social anxiety, depression, eating disorders, anger management, PTSD, and unhealthy behaviours and addictions.

"I know she (Howe) works with PTSD - she's been working with some retired RCMP officers, and she works with suicide victims, she works with children at risk," said Hurley, who first met Howe years ago at their Sears store. "She gets them from different sources."

"I just couldn't believe what I saw," said Armstrong, who visited Howe's farm with a client when it was located in Burford.

"I've been able to witness some of that myself as well, on confidential videos she has shared," said Hurley, who is on the SonFlower Stables planning committee, which is looking for a permanent location for the stables. "She knows how to read her horses.

"Mary is... what you see is what you get," said Hurley. "Her heart is huge and just embraces and gives 110 per cent. That's Mary. Her heart is to help people, it's not about herself."

"And the horses themselves are so gentle and kind," said Armstrong. "You can go up and just wrap your arms around them."

BARBECUE DINNER & AUCTION

Dream Team Global Tillsonburg invites you to attend a holistic, non-alcoholic evening, 5-10 p.m., with their Community of Healing, featuring a live and silent auction, catered barbecue dinner (by Vivian's Country Cookin' in Courtland), educational speakers (including a Mary Howe, a Max International VP, Pat Kennedy - a registered nurse), and health and wellness vendors.

Friday's menu includes smoked brisket, smoked red eye chicken, kale salad with apple cider vinaigrette, potato salad with egg, garden salad, baked beans, vegetable lasagna, fruit salad or fruit trays, strawberries & cream cake, with coffee, tea and juice.

Tickets are just $45, or you can purchase a table of eight for $325. Limited quantity available.

"We're a team that works together to promote health and wellness to our friends - to anyone," said Armstrong, describing Dream Team Global (Max International - the Glutathione Company).

"We have five registered nurses in our local team right now," said Hurley. "So we're working with health professionals in the area.

The Hurley home, which they purchased five years ago, is located on a 3.5 acre landscaped property, with terraces and five water features, including water falls.

"It's a labour of love," Hurley smiled.

Donations and sponsors are being accepted from the community and surrounding area. Sponsorship is available at five levels, from bronze ($100-$249), Silver, Gold, Platinum to Diamond ($1,500 or more, which includes a table of eight tickets).

Auction donations will receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the item, while services are greatly appreciated by not receiptable.
