Tillsonburg community yard sale to support BC fire victims

A community fundraiser yard sale for British Columbia is being organized in Tillsonburg on Saturday, July 29th.

"With the extreme fires happening in B.C., we want to do what we can to help as much as we can to those in need," said Catherine Ryan.

Everyone is invited Saturday, July 29 to the Zehrs Tillsonburg parking lot, 400 Simcoe Street, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. where they will be able to find great items to choose from, plus a raffle table with generous donations from local business people.

"We held one for Fort McMurray with great success when they had those horrible fires," said Ryan, recalling the devastated areas in Alberta where a forest fire southwest of Fort McMurray on May 1, 2016 swept through the community on May 3, 2016 destroying more than 2,400 homes and buildings. "Now we want to raise money to help those affected by the fires in British Columbia."

In the Cariboo Regional District, more than 35,000 residents were under evacuation orders or alerts with 41 homes destroyed last week. Another eight homes were confirmed lost in the Central Okanagan region and three dozen trailers destroyed next to Cache Creek, B.C. where the fires first flared up in early July.

The numbers of homes destroyed in the Interior could still grow, said Cariboo Regional District Chairman Al Richmond, however none of the large wildfires grew on Sunday. Nineteen new fires were reported Sunday, most of them in the Kamloops and southeast fire centres.

"This is unprecedented," said Premier John Horgan last week.

The B.C. Wildlife Service said 140 fires were burning across the province last week, including 15 that threatened communities.

"It's all about Canadians helping Canadians," said Cara (Adeline) Voisin. "So come on out, find some treasures and give to a great cause."

There will be a donation bucket at the Tillsonburg Community Fundraising Yard Sale for those who wish to donate.

Raffle donations will be accepted this week, as well as yard sale donations (no big size items). If you would like to donate, email tburgcountrygal@gmail.com for more information.
