Wilmot Aces compete at Ontario Team Challenge

The Wilmot Aquatic Aces swim team travelled to the Ontario Team Challenge meet in Markham last weekend.

The team has some amazing swims over the three days with 13 of the 16 relays breaking club records and 10 individual club records being broke. The team finished the meet in 6th place out of 26 clubs.

Leading the way for the Aces on the male side was 18-year-old Jacob Isaac, who had a "fabulous" meet breaking 100 fly record long course, being on both record breaking relays 4x100 free and 4x100 Medley and striking gold in 100 fly, silver in 200 fly and 200 br and bronze in 100 br. He also finished in 6th in 50 fr, and 4th in 200 IM. Other members of the 15 and over boys relays which both won bronze medals in were Alex Buehlow, Tillsonburg's Dalton Sanderson and Oliver Forrest (medley), Wes McLachlan (free).

Buehlow, who has been swimming with the ACES for 15 years, won silver in 400 fr with a new club record, 4th in 400 IM, bronze in 200 fr (new club record), 4th in 200 fly, and 200 bk and 6th in 200 IM.

Sanderson, 15, won gold in 100 fly and 200 fly, silver in 200 fr, and 1500 fr and 4th in 200 IM and 400 free.

Forrest picked up a 9th in 200 fr, while McLachlan's best placing was 17th in 200 fr. Other 15 and over males in the meet were Aaron Capindale 9th in 200 bk, Zaccardi Ljubisic with a best placing of 19th in 200 br, and Jonah Noseworthy with a 5th in the 1500 fr.

The 13-14 boys were lead by Ethan Scheerer, who swam really well all weekend. Just missing out on the medals Scheerer finished 4th in 100 fly, and 100 fr, 5th in 200 fr, 100 bk and 200 bk and 6th in a new club record in the 50 fr. He was also part of both relays which were both club records and finished 5th in 400 Free relay and 4th in the 400 Medley Relay.

Other members of the relays were Ryan Bossy, who swam very well finishing 4th in the 1500 fr, 6th in 200 br and 10th in the 200 fr., Tristan Lagace with a best finish of 14th in 50 fr and 100 fr, and Brayden VanDeWynckel 17th in 200 bk. Other 13-14 year old males who swam in the meet were Gracin Black, best placing of 15th in 100 br, and Charlie MacIsaac with best finish of 40th in 200 br.

The 11-12 boys were lead by Matthew VanDeWynckel who had a best placing of 11th in 100 br . He was part of the club record breaking relay team of Matthew, Milo Ljubisic, Jack O’Shaughnessy and 10-year-old Westley Martin Root. The relay finished 7th in the 400 free relay. Milo had a best finish of 19th in 200 br, and Jack had a best finish of 27th in 200 br.

The 10 and under boys swam fast and the 400 Medley relay, anchored by Tillsonburg's Remi Hayes, was one of the most exciting events Sunday evening. Hayes started about 25m behind first place and by the wall had only missed catching up by a mere 0.3 seconds.

Both relays medaled with the Medley relay being a silver and the Freestyle a bronze - both were new club records.

Westley Martin Root struck gold in the 50 fly, silver in 100 fly and 100 IM, and bronze in the 50 br. He also picked up a 5th in the 200 IM. Simon Poeluev won gold in 100 bk, silver in 50 bk and bronze in the 200 fr. He also finished 5th in 100 fly, and 100 IM and 6th in 200 IM.

Hayes had a best finish of 11th in 50 br, while Lachlan Harker rounded out that boys team with 12th in 50 bk.

On the girls side the excitement was just as great. Minutes after Hayes' amazing swim, Tillsonburg's Amy Meharg, 13, and Tillsonburg's Arden Tedford, 14, got up and went gold and silver in the 100m fly. Meharg also struck gold in 400 fr, 200 fr, 100 fr, silver in 100 and 200 bk. She set new club records in 200 fr short course and 200 fr long course and 200 back long course.

Tedford kept the fun going when she finished second in the 200 br final coming back from 10th place in the morning session. She broke two club records - both long course - in 200 br and 200 fly, which she picked up her other medal. She also finished 4th in 400 IM.

Abigail White was a member of the relay that set both club records and had a best finish of 35th in 100 fly. Kate Edmondson was on the Medley relay and had a best finish of 32nd in 200 br and Molly Meissner was on the free relay and had best finish of 45th in 200 br. Other 13-14 girls in the meet were Annie Pucan 54th in 400 free.

The 10 and under girls, who are all in their 9th year, finished 5th in the Medley relay and 8th in the free relay both in club records.
