International Women's Day celebrations take place March 8 at the Oxford Auditorium

Food, fun and lots of special treats are on the agenda for this year’s International Women’s Day celebration at the Oxford Auditorium.

The free event takes place on Wednesday, March 8 and features a vegetarian or non-vegetarian chili lunch, approximately 25 local agencies offering make-and-take projects and music from a barbershop quartet and Metrognomes.

Fanshawe College’s hair program is returning this year to offer tattoos and spray colour for hair.

“We are super stoked about it,” said organizer Phyl McCrum of IWD committee. “It’s so important because women’s contributions need to be celebrated and appreciated. We need to stand in awe of women’s contributions and this is our opportunity to do it.”

The eighth annual event is entirely free, includes tons of door prizes and goodie bags for the first 100 women who arrive.

While doors open at 11 a.m., McCrum said many women line up much earlier in order to receive the bags.

This year, the AppreSHEation Award, will be presented at 12:30 p.m. and the winner and all the nominees will also be recognized.

The AppreSHEation Award recognizes the unpaid work of an Oxford County woman or women's group or organization that has contributed to improving the lives of women in the county.

McCrum said the committee works hard to make sure the event is free and accessible to everyone.

“We try to eliminate as many barriers as possible, so all women can attend,” McCrum said.

Lunch is being sponsored by Scott’s No Frills, Sysco and Bullwinkles.
