Christmas 2016 will go down as the one of the best ever. For me, it contained all the right elements that make such celebrations perfect.

Morgan was with me on Christmas Eve and we shared a time of joy and blessings at Mass followed by some nurturing at Aunt Shirley’s.

The best Christmas always includes family. It’s been a while since we had the opportunity to spend time with so many of my family all at the same time. Morgan and I loved being able to share in the celebrations with my brother, Tim and sister-in-law Bonnie, and family. It did my heart good. Thais and Peter and Lauret and Bob also came and so it was as close to the whole family as we can get these days. We also went to Julie and Doug’s place and to see all the nieces, nephews and cousins before heading home to make supper. It was a wonderful time and the glow of the season is still with me.

I am looking ahead to 2017 with confidence and enthusiasm. This is a time to reflect on all the good things in the year past. It’s a time to re-evaluate or refocus plans and ideas for the New Year. I am encouraged and optimistic 2017 will be even better than 2016, which was pretty terrific. Oh, there were some rough times but they eventually proved to be of more value than obstacle.

Finding the positive in all situations is crucial in securing a joy-filled life. It is so much easier and so much more satisfying to be hopeful and eager than it is to be sour, negative and distrustful. You can’t like yourself much if you are always gloomy and cynical and no one else will want to be around you, either.

Some suggestions to help you enjoy your life more are to smile, be friendly, be kind. Remember I said we should all hold our heads up and look people in the eye and smile as we walked around the malls and streets to spread some Christmas cheer? Well, I think we should begin the 2017 with the resolution to continue that practice for the whole year. I don’t think it will solve the problem of Trump but it will make our own little corner of the world so much more pleasant for all of us.

They say we are the composers of our own destiny. If that is so I am sure we all would like that destiny to include laughter and contentment. I am convinced it isn’t about money or things, travels or possessions. It’s about taking care of ourselves. It’s about being true to who we are. It’s about how we treat others. It’s about being the kind of person we want as our best friend.

Never mind all those usual resolutions we break within a week. Just work on being kind to yourself and others every day. All the other stuff will fall into place and life will be as it should.

Happy New Year everyone.
