Workshop and expo designed to educate about maintaining and enhancing brain health

You are never too young or too old to boost your brainpower and take preventative steps to ward off dementia, according the Alzheimer Society of Oxford.

On Nov. 30, the society is hosting a free workshop and seminar entitled Brain Booster, where local residents of all ages can learn how to maintain and enhance brain health through social activity, exercise, mindfulness, stress management and diet.

“We really want to get the word out about our upcoming event,” said Shelley Green, executive director of the Alzheimer Society of Oxford. “You are never too young to incorporate healthy practices in life and never too old. Certainly the younger the better and we want everybody to come. It’s not just an evening for seniors but an event for everybody.”

The evening event at South Gate Centre will host several guest speakers including Beth Haas, the society’s behavioural and family support worker, who will speak on practical suggestions for keeping your brain challenged.

Pamela Balfour, the Minds in Motion co-ordinator from the Alzheimer Society of Perth, will focus on the link between activity and preventing dementia.

“Her focus will be on the physical exercise component in keeping the brain healthy,” Green said.

Dietician Elyse Therrien will talk about the relationship between food and brain health.

“What we’ve learned is that what is good for your heart is good for your brain,” Green said.

Nate Meidinger, who is working on his Masters of Social Work at King’s College, will give pointers for reducing stress in your life, including removing distractions and negative thoughts.

“One example would be progressive muscle relaxation where you focus on the tips of your toes and go all the way up the body,” Green said. “At the end, your whole body is relaxed and you can really let go of what you are thinking about and stresses in your life.”
