County hears update on mould in Tillsonburg and Ingersoll Woodingford Lodge locations

Oxford County will continue monitoring mould at the Ingersoll and Tillsonburg Woodingford Lodge locations until spring next year.

The county discovered the mould earlier this year beneath the flooring at both locations, which lead to an unexpected investigation into what was causing the mould.

Director of public works Rob Walton said they still don’t understand why the moisture level in the concrete is so high when there are no apparent causes at this time.

“What we’re bringing council up to date on is a couple of things, the first is that the testing doesn't indicate that there is mould in the atmosphere that would be problematic to the residents or workers there,” he said. “That’s good news because it’s not causing an environmental problem.”

Walton said they would also be informing council that they will be taking a longer period of time to monitor the mould, in order to find out what is causing the moisture content in the slab.

The mould also has yet to be removed from the floor in both locations, with Walton adding that; “It’s in the flooring, so there’s no way to remove it without actually taking the flooring out. Right now it’s really an aesthetic problem more than anything else.”

Walton said they hope to find out the route causes of the mould and whether or not the different type of flooring that they installed would fix the issue, adding that it could have something to do with the adhesive being used.

The county switched the flooring in one room of the Tillsonburg location to 100 per cent vinyl flooring that requires no adhesive to be place on the concrete slab.

“It’s the type of adhesive that seems to be the problem,” he said. “(We used) a different type of vinyl flooring.”

Council will receive these updates for information at its meeting on Wednesday.
