Hip hop super group La Coka Nostra's coming to Tillsonburg

La Coka Nostra, a hip hop super group, will be performing in Tillsonburg at Sammy Krenshaw's on Saturday, Oct. 15th.

That's La Coka Nostra as in Danny Boy of House Of Pain... Ill Bill... Slaine... and DJ Eclipse.

"Ill Bill, Slaine, they're pretty well known in the hip hop world," said Ben Andress, Black Top Records.

"This tour features them with DJ Eclipse and Danny Boy - they've toured Canada a couple times, but this tour is promoting their new record that's coming out."

House of Pain produced Jump Around, which has been used in dozens of movies and is universally known in pop culture.

"Tons of movies, commercials and sporting events," said Andress. "So it's kind of cool to have someone here that had a hand in writing that song, hanging out in Tillsonburg. Especially when you look at their tour dates - it's cities like Fort McMurray - and in Ontario the only shows are in Ottawa, Toronto and Tillsonburg.

"Which is pretty awesome," Andress smiled. "Kind of putting Tillsonburg on the map."

The content may not be appreciated by everyone, said Andress, but hip hop fans will eat it up.

Co-promoted by Black Top Records of Tillsonburg and Brantford-based SKM Productions' Shane Maracle, the show will appeal to hip hop fans across southern Ontario.

Tickets are available at Grooves Records (London), Beat Goes On (Brantford), Sammy Krenshaw's (51 Broadway, Tillsonburg) or texting 519-688-5060 or online at Ourevent.ca.

"To me, personally bringing bigger events to smaller cities provides a launching pad for local artists that are out there hustling to get their music heard by a wider audience," said Maracle. "It also provides an experience for those that may not be able to make it to bigger cities to see their favourite artist. Whether it be Hip Hop, Metal, Punk or any genre there is a demand to hear a great mix of local and international talent on stages all over Ontario and I'm proud to be part of such an amazing scene and work with some amazing talent."

"Hip hop is what I live. Rap is something I do." - Chrys Welch (Anubis)

"We've already sold tickets online from Windsor, Kincardine, Niagara Falls - there's people coming from all over Ontario to see this show," said Andress.

"Those people are going to be coming to town, and they're going to be spending money in town, spending money at restaurants, gas stations, hotels... this is going to be a sold out show. Everyone kind of wins.

"The band has thousands and thousands of followers on Facebook, and they just posted their tour dates. People are asking... where's Tillsonburg? A lot of people are coming here, because in our town we can keep the prices lower. If it's in the city, it's going to be higher - we don't have their overhead.

"In Toronto, it's $45 a ticket," he said, noting early bird tickets were $20 in Tillsonburg.

If you're getting tickets now, advance tickets are $25, and $30 at the door.

"Even then, it's still $15 cheaper and you don't have to pay for parking. The venue here is going to have drink specials - it will be under $5, whereas in the city, it's $8. So it's kind of cool that people can get the same experience here, for half the price - in their backyard."
