'A Blast from the Past' at Backus this weekend

Each year during the weekend following Labour Day, historical re-enactors converge on Backus Heritage Conservation Area for what many people view as the highlight of the year - War of 1812 Re-enactment Weekend, now in its 27th year.

For two days, September 10th and 11th, the historic buildings and grounds of Backus Heritage Village will come alive with period merchants, displays and demonstrations all steps away from the military encampments and battlefield.

Programming and activities take place Saturday, September 10, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 11 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The highlight of the two-day event is the mock battle fought between the American and British troops and their allies. This feature battle is staged at 2 pm each day.

Visitors will have the chance to observe morning parade and colours, listen to the sounds of the noon gun cannon blast and artillery demonstration, take part in children’s mini militia, purchase one-of-a-kind items in sutlers row, visit the encampments and mingle with 19th century soldiers as they go about their daily life.

Backus Heritage Conservation Area, where history meets nature, is located 2 km north of Port Rowan.
