Bayfest promises fun for everyone

A Labour Day Weekend tradition in Port Rowan, Bayfest returns this weekend with a long, long list of activities and entertainment starting with the Sip and Savour today - noon to 9 p.m. - at the Port Rowan Community Centre.

See https://go-bayfest.ca for a full list of events.

Here are some of the highlights, including new and returning favourites.

Saturday morning's activities typically focus on families with children - a baby show, dog show, dog trick show, frog toss, wacky hair contest, hula hoop contest, and then in the afternoon, kids casting contest, sandcastle contest, and ice cream eating contest.

One of the most unique events in the area, the Build A Boat By The Bay, returns for its fourth year, sponsored by Port Rowan Home Building Centre. Participants, in teams of two or three, build a boat 'from scratch' using supplies provided by Home Building Centre (wooden skids, plywood, etc) with their own tools. The building process runs from 9:30 a.m. until the races at 1 p.m. when one or two team members put their creations in the water for the ultimate 'seaworthy' test.

Some float, some don't, but everyone has fun.

The soap box derby at 2 p.m. Saturday is enjoyed by adults and children. The karts are built in advance and raced down the Bay Street hill.

New this year, there will be a family movie shown Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. downtown on Bay Street. Bring your own lawn chairs. It will be followed by a street dance from 9-11 p.m.

Sunday's highlight is the 2 p.m. parade, but there are activities from 9 p.m. until approximately 9 p.m. when they start the fireworks.

Following the parade, families will enjoy the Educational Animal Display and Pony Rides, new this year, as well as live entertainment, a reptile show, and one of the craziest events around, the Redneck Rodeo, which features activities for children and adults like 'the rubber chicken toss' and 'seed spitting' leading up to the lawnmower races, which had four entries last year.

Also new this year is a well-known entertainer in the area - The Fireguy - who does a skateboard fire juggling trick show. You'll get a sneak peek of him in the parade.

In case of rain, Sunday's dock area stage entertainment will move indoors to the community centre.
