The World is a Stage

Get your pens poised and calendars ready because there is a lot to do in Tillsonburg and you aren’t going to want to miss anything.

Saturday, April 30, is the St. John’s Anglican Church’s Jewelry & Bake Sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the Tea Room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The late Donna Walton, a member of St. John’s, started jewelry fundraisers for various charities, and the tradition is continuing with a huge jewelry sale where you can munch on a muffin from the bake sale while you shop and finish it off with a cuppa tea and treat. You don’t have to let that broken ring or out of date gold jewelry remain hidden in your sock drawer, you can bring it along and Kelvin will be on hand to give you a no obligation quote if you are looking to sell your own gold, or your gold jewelry. Ladies, if that isn’t enough, there will also be new and gently used scarves, hats and purses for your viewing and purchasing enjoyment!

St. Johns’s on Ridout St. West, is also the venue for the very talented pianist Bryce Lansdell’s one-hour recital. He was requested to play for his hometown and will be playing the same pieces that he played at his last recital in London at Western University. The recital will be Thursday, May 5, 7 p.m. If you have never heard Bryce perform, you will find it a well worth your time. If you have any budding pianists in your family, you should bring them so they can see where all those scales can lead. You can call Rayburn Lansdell for more information at (519) 688-0082.

This years Doors Open Oxford is featuring Tillsonburg on Saturday, May 28! Doors Open is a marvellous events that happens on various weekends in the spring and fall, in a large assortment of venues, in communities around Ontario. Doors not normally open to the public are, allowing the public to learn about the buildings or business, sports or recreation facilities, churches or other places, by having tours. Doors Open Ontario at http://www.doorsopenontario.on.ca will give you all the communities open doors, but this year is very exciting because Tillsonburg is being featured!

Not so exciting is that there are only three venues listed online for our Town. Why are there not tours of our Community Centre facilities, with behind the scenes looks at hockey dressing rooms, and other areas the public normally doesn’t get to see. Business in old homes could allow people access to the rooms not normally open. Even private home owners could open doors to see the marvellous architecture.

New this year: Theatre Tillsonburg opens its doors at the Otter Valley Playhouse during its production of Keep the Home Fires Burning, a tribute to songs popular during the First World War. Visitors can tour the stage and see backdrops, lighting and sound equipment, as well as the green room, props, and costume and makeup departments downstairs. [The theatre has no elevator.] 144789 Potter's Rd, Tillsonburg. Open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Call 519-282-7654 for information.

Also new this year albeit an unusual venue, that doesn’t actually have doors, is The Pioneer Graveyard at Simcoe and Cedar Streets. Come take a tour and learn about the pioneers who founded our town; the War of 1812 soldiers, murder victims, founders and hardworking settlers who forged our town out of the wilderness. Come and meet some of those Pioneers who will be there especially to show off their eternal home and tell their stories. Open from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Call Laurel at 519-842-9416 for information.

Also open is our beautiful Station Arts Centre, a historical site that houses art galleries, pottery studio and a Saturday farmers’ market, so bring your shopping bags! The Centre was created from two notable train stations: the Great Western Railway Station (located on its original site) and the Tillsonburg, Lake Erie and Pacific/Canadian Pacific Station (relocated here in 1994). Located at 41 Bridge St. W; open from 10am-4pm. Call 519-842-6151 for information.

Always open is the magnificent interior of Annandale House, now a museum, exemplifies the “Aesthetic” art movement, a highly colourful and decorative Victorian style of design that was applied in all areas of the home. Built by E.D. Tillson, Annandale House provides an unforgettable visual experience. But special for the day is the tour the museum’s compact storage collection room, normally off limits to the public. Located at 30 Tillson Ave. and open from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Call 519-842-2294 for information.

This town has so much to offer, come out a support these events and check the What’s Happening column and the Town’s page in the Wednesday paper for more!
