Oxford County Public Health issues cold weather alert

After months of mild temperatures and more rain than snow, Oxford County is bracing for the cold.

Public health issued a cold weather alert for Oxford, only the second of the year.

Bitterly cold temperatures are expected over the weekend.

“Dangerously cold air and wind chills (will be) invading the region on Friday night and continuing until Sunday afternoon,” the county said in a press release.

Cold weather alerts are issued when the temperatures is expected to drop below -15 C or -20 C with wind chill.

The overnight temperature on Friday is expected to be around -22 C, but with wind chill it will feel more like -34 C.

During the day on Saturday temperatures will rise, but not much, with a daytime high of -16 C, feeling like -26 C. It’s predicted that Saturday night will also be extremely cold, and Sunday’s high is only -11 C.

There should be some relief on Monday, with daytime temperatures around -1 C.

Residents are reminded to dress for the weather to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Protection is especially important for vulnerable residents, including older adults and young children.

Outdoor workers and athletes should also be cautious.

In Woodstock, adults without a place to sleep can find shelter at Inn out of the Cold between 7 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. at Old St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 723 Dundas St.

Families in need of temporary housing can call the Salvation Army at 519-532-2649.
