The legacy of The Man in Black lives on with the music of CASH, Canada's Ultimate Johnny Cash Tribute Show, performing Sunday, February 14th at the Langton Community Centre.
Band members are Paul Anthony (aka Johnny Cash), Peter Sisk, Steve Petry and drummer Bill Carruthers.
The Sweetheart Concert, which starts at 2 p.m. on Valentine's Day, also features Langton's Haley Van Maele, 11-year-old singer and Grade 6 student at Sacred Heart Catholic School, who will open the concert with her own five-song tribute set and perform three songs with CASH.
Known for his distinctive black attire, Johnny Cash – No. 21 on The Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers ahead of No. 25 Michael Jackson and No. 23 David Bowie – was a prolific singer, songwriter, guitarist, author and actor from the mid-1950s to 2003. Some of his best-known songs included Ring of Fire, A Boy Named Sue, Man in Black, Hurt, and one of Haley's favourites Get Rhythm, originally released in 1956 as a B-side to I Walk the Line, which she sang at the 2015 Langton Fair Junior Talent Show, earning a bye into the Norfolk County Fair semifinals where she finished second.
"Since then she went to a few shows with them (CASH) – she sang Get Rhythm and Jackson at The Hamilton Molson Canadian Studio, in Tillsonburg at the Legion, and the Oakland Legion," said Haley's mother, Janice Van Maele.
"It was kind of surreal that night in Hamilton... because she's only 11 and the people just loved her. We have people actually coming from Hamilton driving down to see her perform in Langton, which is pretty cool."
Even though Haley's been on some big stages now, she's excited to be performing again in her hometown.
"This is her first opening," Janice noted. "This time she's getting her own songs – she's going to open with Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline. They said she could sing pretty much any female from that era."
Tickets for The Sweetheart concert are $20 (adults), $10 for 13-and-under, and are available by calling 226-919-4441. For more on the CASH band, one of the 'world's most authentic Johnny Cash Tribute Shows,' visit www.cashmusic.ca.
After a fundraiser in Langton the following Saturday, Janice said Haley plans to "take it a little bit easy" and learn some new songs.
"We were thinking of taking her up to the Newtal singing contest in Tillsonburg on Saturday at the Legion," said Janice. "We were thinking about it... but haven't really decided yet."
The Ontario Newtal Open Singing Contest has been holding preliminary rounds in Woodstock, Kitchener and Tillsonburg with youth, adult, and singer/songwriter categories. Grand prizes include cash, recording session and concert performances.
In the social media world you can follow the Van Maele family, including Haley and her sisters Hannah and Cassie, on their music-focused Twitter account (@Haley_VanMaele), Facebook page (The Van Maele girls music channel) and YouTube channel (Haley Van Maele and sisters music channel), which includes performances at the Sacred Heart CWL Christmas party and The Hideaway in Langton, where Alison and Darrin Schott's music students can perform on the last Sunday of the month.
