Cannon Creek's dog grooming, boarding, daycare business thriving

What started as a need for their own dog has grown into a full-time business for co-owners Amy and Dave Nadeau of Tillsonburg.

"We opened here in mid-November 2015," said Dave of Cannon Creek Dog Grooming, Boarding and Daycare where they made extensive renovations on the Cranberry Road property, located on the edge of town a couple kilometres north of North Street. "There was some infrastructure on the property and we're pretty entrepreneurial."

Dave also has his own business on-site, D Squared Designs.

"When we started, we renovated that half (kennel area) because we have dogs and our family has dogs," said Amy. "That trickled into friends. And that trickled into 'hey I know somebody.' Our dogs needed haircuts, our family's dogs needed haircuts, so I did that as well. And it just kind of kept on going. It was a learning curve but we were interested in it, so it was fun for us to learn how to do everything."

They tried it, liked it, and decided to renovate another part of the building into a dog grooming area.

"This half is something new. Instead of the stationary cages that were set up, we're just putting crates there in the open space if people want."

They have two experienced groomers, both continuing their education to become Master Groomers.

It keeps them busy, but the daycare side of the business has grown too.

"There's dogs that come every day for daycare," said Amy. "And then the boarding, of course, on long weekends and holidays.

"These two, they came together and they've been coming since they were puppies. Out here, I'd say we get about 15 (per day), because it's really rare that people only have one dog. They have two or three."

Their 15-year-old son's name was the inspiration for the business name, Cannon Creek Dog Grooming, Boarding and Daycare.

"There's a beautiful creek on property," noted Amy. "So we thought we'd call it Cannon Creek!"

Their website can be viewed at They also have a Facebook page (Cannon Creek Dog Boarding & Grooming).

"We're also attending trade shows and events that we know about," said Amy.

The facility is only open to dogs.

"For some reason we're both extremely allergic to cats. We can do dogs – dogs seem to be fine."

"At Cannon Creek, our team of highly experienced, certified and friendly dog groomers will ensure that not only will your dog look and feel its best, but we'll treat your pet with the utmost respect while in our care. All our pet groomers are also certified in pet first aid and CPR, giving you the peace of mind should a medical issue arise. Even the volunteers here have that (pet first aid) as well.

"We also cater to large and elderly dogs. We have an electric lift table that helps them get comfortably and stress free into the tub. Being set up for daycare also helps us to take our time with them so we don't have to rush the drying time."

Premium de-shedding products ensure the longest lasting results – up to two months.

"Excellent treatment for Labs, Retrievers, greyhounds and dogs that shed!" said Amy. "If you are a new puppy owner, just adopted a rescue, or just looking for a new groomer, feel free to give us a call and come check us out."

Cannon Creek is open by appointment at 519-872-3647.

The facility includes year-round climate control, the owners' residence on site, relaxing music, pheromone diffusers and use of night lights. Each dog is welcome to use a dog cot so they are up off the floor.

"There's a free area for them to run outside," said Dave.

"A big fenced in area now... no dog runs anymore," said Amy. "When we're working here doing grooming, most of them are 'out' in the room, just hanging out. Then they go outside in the big play area.

"A lot of them are house dogs and they are used to being home all day," said Amy, noting a good temperament is required.

All vaccines need to be up to date INCLUDING bordetella (Kennel Cough). You must show proof. Also, the dog must also be spayed or neutered. Rates are $20/day for daycare, $25/night for boarding with special rates for families with multiple dogs and extended stays.

Extra services include Pet Taxi $15 (in-town) for pickup and delivery; and daycare and boarding dogs, a $15 Trail Walk (30 minutes), on the Trans-Canada Trail.

Proud supporters of the Greyhound Rescue Association on Culloden Road, Cannon Cree collects items year-round for GRA in the form of blankets, towels, laundry and dishsoap, and food treats, and deliver them to the Rescue once a month.

"We also do a first grooming FREE on any adopted dog," said Amy, noting the owner must show info on the adoption.
