World class entertainers in Tillsonburg

There is no shortage of musical entertainment in our area.

It is so good to see world class musicians are willing to make stop overs in small town Ontario. I know some are still building their careers but some have already made it, winning awards and topping charts in Canada and the United States.

When I was a kid we got a day off school, if you lived in Norfolk County, to go to The Norfolk Country Fair and Horseshow. We all called it Simcoe Fair. It seemed the be all and end all of fairs to us, maybe because of that day off school, but also, I think, because it seemed so big to us. There were lots of rides, food, buildings to wander through, games to be played and all sorts of interesting things to see at the grandstand like the demolition derby, car races, chuckwagon races, performers and horses of all kinds. And, of course, lots of kids our age looking for other kids our age.

One of the highlights was the excitement of the musicians and singers who performed in the evenings. We used to get the likes of Tommy Hunter. I know, but he was a big deal back then and I once saw Charlie Pride at the Western Fair.

As I got older more and more noteworthy acts would be enticed to come to the local fairs and it brought in great crowds. I am glad this trend continues. The Tillsonburg Fair attracted James David Carter of The Voice fame, who is a Top 10 ranked country artist. Two Canadian country recording artists, Levi Hart and Sandi Skye also performed and by all accounts were terrific.

Brett Kissel, an award-winning Canadian country singer and Marianas Trench, a pop rock quartet with six No. 1 videos and several awards to their name, will be at the Simcoe fair this year in October. Pretty hot stuff. And Norwich’s own No Name Band are headlining at the Woodstock Fair this weekend.

Not everyone is as excited with the sights, sounds and smells of a county fair but still love to listen to really good music performed by a world class artist. You can find just that in Tillsonburg on October 3, 2015 at 7 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church.

Victoria Gydov of Oxford County, was born in Copenhagen, Denmark where she trained and performed. Before moving to London, Ont. in 2005 she performed in the United States for many years. She has been a concert soloist and has been on TV and radio. She also teams up with other composers on new music as a lyricist and vocalist and has performed with various symphony orchestras with roles in H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and A Little Night of Music, to name a few.

Victoria is a multi-talented artist with experience in a variety of styles such as opera, operetta, pop-opera crossover music, Christian contemporary and even electronic dance music. She has been described as incredible and wonderful by those who have had the privilege of hearing her perform.
