The Tillsonburg Kiwanis Fishing Derby, in conjunction with Bob Izumi's Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing Days, will be held Saturday, July 4th at Lake Lisgar.
The annual derby, which takes advantage of the province's free family fishing week, begins as early as 6 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. Registration – it's FREE – takes place at the Lake Lisgar boat ramp, near the rowing dock.
"It's all free – adults and children," said Mike Dean, Kiwanis member. "And every kid gets a swag bag. We have a whole bunch of giveaway T-shirts and hats."
Prizes are available for assorted catches on Saturday including Most Fish, Biggest Fish, Longest Fish, Catfish, Carp... and more. The Kiwanis Club donated $700 toward prizes, and the Knights of Columbus contributed another $200, bringing them close to the $1,000 mark.
"The bigger prizes are the fishing poles."
Anglers can fish from the shore, or on the lake, provided they use non gas-powered boats.
"Canoes, paddle boats..." said Frank Kempf from the Lake Lisgar Revitalization Project.
"There were a couple bigger boats last year, but they use trolling motors," said Dean.
Targets at the Kiwanis Fishing Derby include rainbow trout, perch, bass, and sunfish.
Just last week, Kempf witnessed a major smallmouth catch at the lake.
"Seven and a half pounds," said Kempf, "and we've got the photo."
