From the Hack

As I look out my window on a snowy wintry scene and note the minus temperatures on the thermometer I have to say I’m glad that I decided to enjoy an indoor winter sport that allows me to feel the cold, but not the wind chill!

We are into the Season of Champions now as the Ladies Scotties started on Saturday from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. I am not a fan of the new relegation round and feel sorry for Kerry Koe-Galushka (NWT) who lost her chance to compete in the Scotties to the Northern Ontario representative Tracy Horgan. I think I’d rather see all the provinces represented and not have a returning champion. What other sport gives last year’s champion a bye to this year’s championship round? Just my opinion. I also think the Territories should have their own little playdown to see who gets in as there are only a handful of clubs up there compared to the rest of the country. It does look like we will see Homan, Jones, and Sweeting in to the playoff round with a bunch of teams fighting for the 4th spot when the round robin is finished. No predictions from here other than I expect to see one of those three teams take the championship.

I have to send kudos to the Ingersoll Curling Club who did an excellent job hosting the Ontario Milk Tankard – The Clash on the Thames. The Dorchester arena was a great venue and the committee and many volunteers did a fine job! Without Glenn Howard in the mix I found it difficult to choose a team to cheer for, but I think Team Kean will represent us well. I know many of the local curlers were cheering for Team Epping and I think they also would have done well at the Brier but will have to try again next year.

In our own club we have several draw winners to report. In the Monday Mixed the team of Randy and Lindee DeClercq and John and Deb Prno were in first place with Team Lubberts right behind. On the Tuesday night Ladies the team of Tina VanderWallen-Howey, Yonna DiLella, Helen Cull and Diana Blake took the E.R. Adams Insurance trophy for the season’s third draw. All leagues are into their final draw before their club championship draws which will begin in March.

On the bonspiel trail the team of Les Peter, Randy DeClercq, Frank VandeSlyke and Gerald Sandham travelled to Plattsville for a bonspiel last week where they had two wins and one loss to sit in first on their draw. The men had a great time and brought home the ‘bacon’ so to speak, as they returned with some great meat draw prizes from the spiel.

The Board has made a decision to offer open free curling on Sunday nights from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for adults March 8-22. Children are welcome Sunday afternoons from 1-2. They have also made the decision to forgo the spare fee for the month of March which they hope will encourage more people to try the sport plus experience a game in one of the Leagues or for curlers from the Rec League to try one of the other leagues. Bring your friends to try the game.

MURDER MYSTERY DINNER

The final event and fundraiser for the club this year will be a Murder Mystery Dinner on Saturday, April 11th. This includes an evening of entertainment beginning with a social hour at 6 where you may be mingling with a murderer and a three course dinner at 7 p.m. during which the murder is solved.

Tickets are $50 each and available from Heather Benton (519-409-0215) and other members of the board of directors. Get yours soon, reserve a table for your group, support the club and have some fun. That night there will also be a Silent Auction, if you have something to donate please let Heather know. Volunteers are needed for the kitchen that night as well so you can be a part of the night and help out too.

On Tuesday, February 24 the 36th Bronze Broom will take place. The bonspiel has been changed to a one-day spiel and has a full slate of 16 teams signed in for the event. Right after the Bronze Broom, the Crompton Home Hardware Men’s Spiel takes place and it too is full with 16 teams. If you have not done a volunteer kitchen duty this would be a great time to sign in. Look for the roster sheet on the board beside the kitchen.

I should inform those of you wondering about the Community Service Bonspiel which usually happens at this time of year that it has been postponed until November as our sponsors (Good Redden Klosler) are finding that this time of year (tax season) is too busy for them and they needed to make the move. So look for those letters early in the next curling season.

See you on the ice. Curling Rocks!
