Firefighters raise money for Muscular Dystrophy

Tillsonburg Firefighters Association and Scotiabank presented a cheque for $7,661.54 to Muscular Dystrophy Canada Monday afternoon at the the Tillsonburg Fire Hall.

"Scotiabank also generates money and contributes it to the Boot Drive campaign for MD Canada," said Dave Metselaar, co-chair of the Firefighters Association MD Canada committee with John Kovacs. "So $2,500 of the cheque was contributed by Scotiabank Tillsonburg."

John Boe, Ontario Firefighter Advisor - Oxford County for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, and Carrie Gibson, Revenue Development Coordinator for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, were on hand for the presentation, along with several members of the Firefighter Association.

"We like to have our Boot Drive in the fall," said Metselaar. "Ours was in November."

Local Boot Drives are typically held on a Saturday morning with firefighters – holding their Boot Drive signs – approaching drivers on Broadway and Simcoe Street.

"We tell the drivers we're collecting for Muscular Dystrophy and most people just dump their change into our boots. We're out there for two-three hours, then we're done.

"It's done in many communities across the country. Muscular Dystrophy is the firefighters' charity of choice, and 2014 was a significant year because it was the 60th anniversary of firefighters raising money for Muscular Dystrophy. So 2014 was a huge year for us."
