Onwards Thrift gives back

Onwards Thrift at 165 Tillson Avenue is all about giving back and supporting the community.

A non-profit store, proceeds from Onwards Thrift support local Christian education at Oxford Reformed Christian School in Mount Elgin.

"We also give back to the local charities," said John Veldman, chair of the Onwards board. "And education in general."

The thrift store, which opened in Tillsonburg in March 2014, is all volunteer run, other than management.

"It's been a great success and because of that we're able to give back," said Veldman. "We are very happy with the community support in donating articles and we'd like to urge people to continue to donate so that we can also continue to give back."

There is an overall desire to be a 'good citizen' in the community, he said following a $2,000 cheque presentation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and Area earlier this month.

Items for sale at Onwards Thrift include antiques, decor, books, housewares, new 'scratch and dent' furniture, sporting goods, and a large selection of clothing.

"And we have a large donation centre in the back so that people can donate."

Currently open Tuesday-Saturday, Onwards Thrift will also be open Mondays in the New Year. Boxing Week sales started Dec. 23.

"Volunteers are welcome," said Veldman, seeking community-minded people willing to share some of their time. "Because it is mostly volunteer-run, we are seeking local volunteers."
