Fifth VHSS e-waste recycling fundraiser runs until Oct. 30

You've got old cell phones, old televisions, old computers, old cameras.

All these and more can be recycled through Valley Heights Secondary School's fifth Enviro Club e-waste fundraising recycling event on now, continuing weekdays to Thursday, Oct 30.

Items can be dropped off at a bin located at the school (in the parking lot – it's well signed) between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you need help unloading items into the bin, ask at the school office.

"It's the time of year for fall cleanups," noted staff advisor Peter Gumulak.

Acceptable items, in addition to those listed above, are: amplifiers, answering machines, AV players and recorders, pagers, monitors, computer peripherals, fax machines, printers and scanners, radios and speakers, and receivers.

"The one thing we can't take are household appliances – we have people drop off microwaves and water dispensers, but we can't take those," said VHSS staff advisor Beth Ardiel.

The school's Enviro Club currently has about 10 regular members.

"Which is good for our school – we're a pretty small school," said Ardiel. "This is our fifth e-waste fundraiser and so far we've collected over 42,000 pounds."

Funds raised are used for environmental projects around the school such as purchasing materials for outdoor benches (assembled by VHSS tech classes), mulch, soil and Carolinian trees.

"We're trying to get an outdoor classroom," said Gumulak.
