On Friday, Oct. 3 at 5:01 p.m. Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police officers were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover on Glen Erie Line just west of County Rd. 55, Municipality of Bayham.

At the time of the collision a 2012 white Freightliner cargo type van being driven by a 45-year-old Leamington man was westbound on Glen Erie Line carrying approximately 10,000 to 12,000 lbs of fresh fish when the vehicle traveled into the north ditch rolling onto its side.

Police investigation revealed the driver had used the engine brake to slow down prior to turning onto Glen Erie Line from County Road 55, but had forgotten to take it off. The driver temporarily took his eyes off the road to view the status of the brake and when doing so left the paved portion of the roadway and onto the grass to the right of the highway. The truck stopped approximately 50 metres after leaving the paved highway rolling onto the passenger side.

The truck spilled a small amount of diesel fuel.

The driver and sole occupant suffered minor injuries in the collision but did not require medical attention.

The driver of the truck, Jake Fast, 45, of Leamington has been charged with Careless Driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

Officers were on scene until just after 9 p.m. to facilitate the investigation, removal of the truck and clean-up of the scene. The roadway was closed to allow for these actions.
