Job seekers, volunteers explore Fair opportunities

Thursday's 11th annual Tillsonburg Community Services and Career Fair was about sharing information.

Not just current jobs, but how to train for jobs. And where to find essential community services in Tillsonburg and surrounding areas.

"We did very well," said Susan Rebry, manager of the employment and literacy services at the Tillsonburg Multi-Service Centre. "We had 40 participants in this year's fair, and we've had youth, students, seniors, and general public come through – and it's still busy. We have an hour-and-a-half left and we've had close to 700 people so far. Generally we get about 800 and I think we'll be comparable to other years by the end of the day.

"I would call it successful. Everyone I've talked to has been pleased with the turnout."

"I think we had a great day," said Karen Baird, branch manager at Talentcor, Recruitment Specialists in Tillsonburg, estimating 10-15 people put their names in for jobs Thursday, and many business cards were handed out to people for their children or grandchildren. "It's worth it."

Jobs available included electricians, forklift drivers, truck mechanics, shipping & receiving, concrete formers, machinists, as well as seasonal agriculture jobs.

"We have a lot of positions available."

Talentcor has clients from Aylmer to Hamilton, and north to Guelph and Woodstock. The local office is located at 261 Tillson Avenue.

SRG (Stevens Resource Group), located at 55 Brock Street, also had a booth at the career fair.

"We're very happy to be here," said Pamela Poole, SRG workforce development manager. "It's more about our presence and people knowing that something about us they didn't know previously, and that there are lots of job opportunities."

Some of the key jobs available Thursday through SRG were material handler, production scheduler, automotive assembler, heavy duty equipment technician, agricultural assistant, production welders, electrical harness assemblers, and construction crew supervisor.

"Automotive, industrial and clerical," said Poole, noting a folder with the resumes handed in Thursday.

In addition to the local office, SRG has Ontario offices in London, Ingersoll, Stratford, Kitchener, Woodstock, and Brantford.

The focus is 'ongoing' jobs, said Poole.

"It depends what the person is looking for. Some are looking for part-time, some are looking for full-time. Some are looking for short assignments. We cater the needs of what our clients people looking for a job are looking for."

Some positions are 'direct hire,' said Poole. "Sometimes the client looks to us to do the recruiting, and they do the hiring.

"Some people will start out with us as temporary, and then go to permanent. But it's more than a temporary service – we're more of a workforce development and training business. We try to help people find something that will last longterm for them – and we do the same for the people we're looking to hire for as well, for the businesses that are looking for that longterm opportunity."
