The year is 2030. A 134-year-old World War I veteran, Cecil Farmer, is discovered living in the wilds of Oxford County, north of Tillsonburg. What follows is 1914: The Last Trench Fighter, Part 1 – the first of five live outdoor theatre plays written, directed and produced by Robin Barker-James – told through a series of flashbacks at Barker-James' outdoor history site. A cast of 19 local actors, both children and adults, bring to life the causes of The Great War, how Canadians reacted, training at Camp Valcartier in Quebec, the siege of Fort Loncin in Belgium (which marked the debut of Germany's Big Bertha howitzer), atrocities at the Belgin village of Ethe, and the Christams Truce of 1914 near Ypres. The play continues this week, Sept. 11-14.
