Backus celebrates 25th annual War of 1812 re-enactment this weekend

Booming cannons, beating drums and the smells of campfires and black powder will fill the air at Backus Heritage Conservation Area this weekend, Sept. 6-7 as the Backus War of 1812 Re-enactment marks its 25th anniversary.

Watch the British, Americans and First Nation Allies meet in three different battle re-enactments, two on Saturday, one on Sunday. Battles times are 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., with an artillery demonstration taking place beside the Mill Pond Saturday at 7 p.m.

“This weekend event is packed with activity,” says heritage programmer curator, Robin DeCloet. “Children can take part in mini militia and try their hand at a variety of activities at the Playhouse. The encampments will be open each day for inspection and visitors can interact with re-enactors to learn what life was like during this time in our nation’s history. In addition to the battle re-enactments, a highlight of the weekend will be the guided lantern tour of the encampment on Saturday evening.”

The Backus 1812 Re-enactment weekend is more than just a battle. Visitors to the Heritage Village can enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, view the 1812 documentary A Desert Between Us and Them and learn what medical practice was like in the early 19th century. In the morning, witness the assembling of colours and inspection of the troops. Merchants in Sutlers Row will offer specialty shopping and demonstrations of rope making, blacksmithing, weaving and cooking to bring this period of history to life.

Meet the miller in the 1798 Backhouse Mill National Historic Site and discover the stories behind the Mill’s history.

War of 1812 Re-enactment takes place on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $7 adults; $6 seniors and $4 children, with a maximum daily rate of $13.

Backus Heritage Conservation Area is located 2 kilometres north of Port Rowan.
