Halfway through a busy summer at the library

It’s hard to believe that we are already half-way through the summer, but we’re busy enjoying summer programs here at the library!

If you are a parent looking for some great story time programs, we’ve got them for kids of all ages! Books for Babies runs on Tuesday mornings at 9:45 a.m. for babies under 18 months and their caregivers in our children’s area. Learn new songs and rhymes, and get lots of suggestions about books to share together from our program leader, Becky. Older children can hear stories at Memorial Park, thanks to Public Library on Wheels’ “Sunshine and Stories” program on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Trish will be there to tell great stories, teach some songs, and lead kids in a craft. This program is best suited for children up to age six.

The Summer Reading Club is well underway, and we are getting closer to the goal of reading 4,000 books! Drop-in activities for kids ages 6-12 are held on Tuesdays at 2 p.m., while pre-schoolers can stop by on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. for something special to do! There is still space in the drawing workshop with Karlene Ryan on Thursday, August 21 at 1 p.m. This program is designed for kids ages 8 and up, and requires registration, so please phone the library to reserve a spot!

The Saturday, August 16 visit with young adult writer E.K. Johnston has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, but we are working with her to reschedule for the fall. Apologies to those who were planning to attend! We will advise you of the new date as soon as possible. Until then, check our catalogue to place a hold on her book The Story of Owen: Dragon Slayer of Trondheim.

Adults, we have lots happening for you, too! The Monday Film Series continues with some great titles, including one of the late James Gandolfini’s last films, a Woody Allen film featuring Cate Blanchett in an Academy Award-winning performance, and an Oscar nominated movie following a young singer-songwriter through 1960s Greenwich Village. All films start at 1 p.m. and are drop-in.

Laughter Yoga continues on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m., so come in to laugh your stress away and focus on positivity! We will be hosting another Board Game Night for Adults on Wednesday, August 13 at 5:30 p.m. Bring your friends and try your hand at trivia, Settlers of Catan, or an old-fashioned game of cards. Each group will receive a special gift, so don’t miss out! Spaces are limited.

On Wednesday, August 20 we will be showing TED Talks by some of the worlds most innovative and inspiring thinkers! Malcolm Gladwell, Maysoon Zayid, and Sheryl Sandberg are among the great talks we’ll see, so join us at 7 p.m. and you won’t be disappointed!

Finally, the library is having its Friends of the Library BIG Summer Book Sale on Saturday, August 23 from 9:30-1 p.m. There is truly something for everyone, so stop by and pick up an old (or new) favourite title for yourself or another book lover. All proceeds will go towards library programming for youth.

For more information or to register for one of our programs, phone the library at 519-842-5571.
