Article content

The 5th annual Butterfly and Dragonfly Festival is coming soon! A popular, family-friendly event, the Festival place Sunday, July 13 at the Backus Heritage Conservation Area near Port Rowan.

Organized by Nature’s Calling Environmental Education, the festival offers numerous activities planned throughout the day including guided butterfly identification walks, pond dipping and pond walks, kids crafts, face painting, and much more.

Native plant gradening tips will be featured for those with a green thumb and kids will have a chance to pot their own native flowering plants so they can attract butterflies to their backyards. New for 2014 is a live Butterfly House featuring native butterflies that kids can see close-up when entering the enclosure. A live butterfly release is planned for 2:30 p.m.

The highlight of the day will be the ever-popular Spread Your Wings Parade where kids dress up as butterflies and dragonflies and flutter around to live music by The Ukeheads and Fred and Rosie Guidolin.

Also, M&R Orchards will have their gelato ice creams, shakes, slushies and smoothies for sale, and Kaley’s Kakes has donated cupcakes-on-a-stick for the little ones.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission into the park is $13/carload and will give access to all the activities throughout the day.

This year’s festival is made possible through the support of Ontario Power Generation and the Long Point Region Conservation Authority. For more information, contact Bernie Solymar, Nature’s Calling Environmental Education, at info@naturescalling.ca or 519-410-7376.
