TWO CENTS WORTH - LINDA HOFFMAN

It’s been a busy week and the weekend is shaping up to be just as busy.

The weather has been gorgeous and I have been getting lots done. Not nearly as much as needs doing but I think I at least made a dent. Been cleaning out closets, basement and garage in preparation for the big village wide yard sale on Saturday.

I don’t know how, after doing this for quite a few years, I still have so much stuff. Each year I think I am making huge strides in simplifying my life and decluttering my house but each year I manage to find enough to make a decent showing.

One of my major rules is if it doesn’t sell it does not come back in the house. I pack up anything good that is left at the end of the day and load it into my van to take to the Salvation Army. Everything else goes out to the road for the large article pick up the following week. Not much makes it for the pick up because as soon as the yard sale ends and things are hauled out to the road, folks come by and take what they want. Most of my junk finds a home and helps someone else, so I am good with that.

I think it was quite brilliant to schedule the big pick up the week following the yard sale. It’s a good deal for everyone.

The sale is a good one. You don’t often find so many yard sales all in one place so it’s a buyers’ market with something at every price point. A couple of friends are setting up at my house so it should be a good selection of items.

For those who are maybe not so interested in yard sales, there is a car show on the grounds of the historical Treffrey Mill. The South Norwich Historical Society has a food booth at the mill and will be serving up breakfast and lunch.

Am not much for yard sales really as a buyer or a seller. I never check the papers looking for them and rarely stop at one along the road. I figure I have enough of my own no-longer-needed-or-wanted items so there is no need to see if someone else has something I can add to that same category.

Having one is hard work, I have discovered. I hate the whole pricing aspect of it so I underprice most everything and if anyone makes an offer I usually accept. Not good at the dickering. So the amount of work is never reflected in the amount of cash I earn. I look at the whole thing as a social event which helps me edit. I enjoy the day spent with the friends who set up their tables at my house. There are usually a lot of people I know who stop by for a visit. I also enjoy meeting a lot of folks throughout the day and there is always a character or two to keep things interesting.

So I invite everyone out to Otterville on Saturday, wander our rustic little village, maybe you will find a treasure or two, check out the classic cars, stop by for a chat, sit a spell on the front porch. You are all welcome.
