OPP defend their Guns vs Hoses wing-eating title at Kelsey's

As expected, the wings – 352 in total – were great Tuesday night at the 2nd Annual Guns vs Hoses Wing Eating Extravaganza hosted by Kelsey's Tillsonburg.

And the completely unexpected crickets, well, they weren't that bad either judging how quickly the Oxford OPP and Tillsonburg Fire Services firefighters knocked 'em back.

"It was very successful – it was great," said Kendall Causyn, Kelsey's Tillsonburg manager – guest experience, very pleased to have a full-house patio turnout for their 2nd annual kickback night for the local OPP and firefighters. "A lot of fun."

The wing-eating contest began with teams of four (with names like Recon1 and Tac3) eating eight wings – two mild, two medium, two hot, and two suicide wings.

"They were all mixed in, randomly put on a plate."

The rounds continued in elimination and timed formats eventually leading to a semifinal round and championship eatoff against the defending champs, Jerry and the Cruisers, who had struggled early in Tuesday's competition.

Introduced for the 'fun factor,' the crickets were offered to anyone who wanted to speed up the process. Eating one live cricket replaced eating four wings. First the firefighters, then the OPP, were quick to accept the challenge, and 10 crickets were eventually consumed.

"We couldn't believe that they did it," Causyn laughed, impressed by their bravery, their friendly competitive nature, and good sense of humour. "Kudos to them – awesome!"

When the night was done, Jerry and the Cruisers successfully defended their wing-eating championship. As event winners, the Cruisers announced they would be donating the Guns vs Hoses kickback proceeds to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
